folder's modified dates keep changing

Hello,
I think my filesystem is corrupted. I am running
Windows XP Pro SP1. I believe folders should maintain
their creation date for "Date Modified". However, if I do
anything inside a folder, even open a Word document and
then close it without saving (autosave in Word is turned
off), it will change the Date Modified of the folder to
the current date. This is creating havoc for my archival
purposes.
Does this sound like a virus? Should I try reinstalling
Win XP over top the current install?

Folders only store a created date which is shown for all three times. The ony date on a folder should be the created date.

If you modify the contents of the folder by diddling with some of its
files, why would you expect the modified date to remain the same? You
modified the folder by changing its contents. Modified really means modified
and (usually) has nothing to do with created. If you are still concerned
about this, you can always change the display preferences, turn of the
modified column, and turn on the created column.

Modified means Modified. If you access a file in the folder, then its
Access date gets changed - and this has made a modification in the
folder.

Backup systems should use the 'archived' bit to decide whether to
include a file, turning it off when they have done so
