folder shows empty

When I try and open a folder in Outlook Express/Local folders, it tells me
the folder is empty but it is not. If I check in WINDOWS\Application
Data\Identities\{17 etc.}\Microsoft\Outlook Express, the folder is there and
it shows that it is not empty. How can I get Outlook to open these?

If an Outlook Express folder has been emptied, but has NOT been compacted,
it can easily be larger (MUCH larger) than a new, empty folder file.
