I have 2 WinXP systems on a home network. n each system I have marked the
"C" drive (root) for shring by "Everyone" but when I try to view the
contents of that drive on the othewr computer get an error indicating I
don't have the correct permissions What did I miss here

Hi,

Turn off simple file sharing in Explorer / Tools / Folder Options / View
(tab). (Uncheck the last item.)

Connecting to the root of the C drive is a bad thing as you can run stuff in
program files that will mess up the registry of the machine you are
connecting from. So take care there.

The PC you are connecting to will only trust Everyone it _knows_ about. Not
Everyone on this planet. So you need to connect with a set of credentials
that the sharing PC knows about. (User/password).

Thanks for the quick response. I do have Simple File Sharing Off. I am
trying to add specific machine names and/or user logins to the permissions
but I cannot get it to accept anything I enter. For example, while om
machine "SYS1" I want to add permission for "SYS2" to access the C drive but
it will not accept "SYS2" as an entry when I try to add that to the
permissions?

Hi Wayne,

You could actually create a user on SYS1 PC - say "Fred" & a password
(whatever) - probably make them an administrator.
Control Panel / Administrative tools / Computer Management / Local Users and
Groups / Users - Now add the user Fred.
On the Sharing and security tab - you need to grant 1. Share access to
Administrators (Full Control) and then 2. on the security tab make sure
administrators have full control.

That should enable _any_ other PC to connect to SYS1 using the Fred
credentials. The machine name is not as important as making sure your
workgroup is the same across all PC's.

I only suggest Fred as a user for simplicity. Typically if the Administrator
account AND password are the same on SYS1 & SYS2 just use that.

Choosing a workgroup name "WORKGROUP" or "MSHOME" or "SYSNETWORK" does not
matter - the point is ALL pc's must have the _same_ workgroup name in the
computer settings.

Well, that was fun - I hope you get it going.

Cheers,
