Folder settings keep being changed on me!

Frequently the settings for one or another of my folders changes,
seemingly spontaneously. Usually this is image directories randomly
toggling between thumbnail and filmstrip views, infrequently for any
given directory (but more often for some) but cumulatively at least a
couple a day, but the My Music directory and subdirs seem especially
prone to it -- they seem to revert from Tiles or List to Thumbnails
(useless, since there are no visual media in there) every single time I
navigate away and back!

Nobody else is supposed to have access to this machine; it's physically
locked up so I'm the only one with actual access to the hardware
itself, and it's firewalled. Regular antivirus, antitrojan, and
antispyware sweeps and "safe computing practises" are observed, and the
most recent scans turned up clean. It doesn't seem to be theoretically
possible for someone else to be changing my settings around under these
conditions; nonetheless, it is happening.

Any idea how to find out who is doing this, and how to block their
access? I want my settings changes to stick!

Have you checked all the necessary options?
Dunno the English menu terms, but do the following:
- set view of a folder to desired type
- Explorer->Tools->Folder options->View
- click button "Apply to all folders"
- and then below the button also clear the checkmark to save view settings
for each folder separately

That should do it, though I don't know about all those "My ... blah blah"
folders since I've never used them.

That would be dumb. I have folders I want to view in list form, others
I want thumbnails for; the majority, tiles. But not the same for all of
them...

Then omit those points. I was telling from my own preference, since that
tile view is not efficient to view a large amount of files.

But maybe this clears the currput settings so you can store your settings
anew, so now they _are_ stored the way you want.
Another possibility than to use "Apply to all folders" is to check the
desktop.ini files in your folders. The view settings are stored in them,
AFAIK.

They're not human-readable, though, are they? In any event, I don't see
very many -- even with the "hide system files" and other such "hide"
options in Explorer turned off.

That's Windows - it won't show those (same with those nasty thumbs.db). You
could use an alternative file manager to find them (like Total Commander).

Which a little research reveals *also* isn't free...

You can use it to the full extend. There is only a nag screen where you
have to press the 1, 2 or 3 key.
I have abandonned Explorer in favour of TC.

Perhaps it's escaped your notice that I'm looking for a *nuisance-free*
file managing experience? :)

Then either just let TC run the whole day or try something that comes free
like www.freecommander.com.
But working with it is so efficient once one knows all shortcuts that after
several months of heavy usage I'm actually considering to buy it.
