Folder passwords

Could someone kindly tell me how to set a read-only-access password on a
folder that is shared over a network on an XP Pro SP2 machine?

I have a shared wireless internet connection, and would like to give certain
people read-only access to some of my files. I have disabled simple file
sharing, but it appears that to make use of this I need to pre-program
authorised user names. I would prefer a system where I can simply tell people
a password and then they can enter it to gain access, since at the moment, I
do not know their exact computer names as they appear on the network.

It used to be possible to do this using the 'Sharing' tab of the
'Properties' menu using earlier versions of Windows (certainly 98/ME I
think), but I'm having no luck with XP Pro.

On a similar note, is it possible to set a Workgroup password, preventing
unauthorised persons from even viewing which computers belong to a workgroup?

Many thanks in advance,

Rich

In this case, you can create a username for example bob and assign a password. Then every one use bob to access the folder. You can hind a computer but you want to prevent unauthorized persons to view the computer is difficult.

I'm sorry, but Windows XP doesn't have passwords for shared folders.

Workgroups don't have passwords either. Workgroups play no part in
security or access control. A computer in any workgroup can access a
computer in any workgroup.

With simple file sharing disabled, you can give individual users
access permission on a shared folder. If you don't know the other
people's user names, create a user account on your computer, set the
desired permission for that user account, and tell its name and
password to the desired people. When they try to connect to the
shared folder from a Windows 2000 or XP computer, they'll be prompted
to enter a user name and password. Entering the user name and
password that you tell them will give them the type of access that you
permit. This won't work for people who have Windows 95, 98, or Me.
They won't be able to access the shared folder unless their login user
name and password match an account on your computer.

Ron Lowe and I have written a web page with details of setting
permissions:
