Hello. I am having trouble setting passwords for individual folders so
others on the network can't access them. This is easy on Win 98 -- click
sharing, passwords. The option seems to have disappeared on XP -- your help
is appreciated.

Hi Peter,
we need to know what file system you are using (NTFS or FAT) anyways i do
not think XP uses passwords for file sharing on FAT.

to find out what file system you are using, right click on the drive, go to
properties and on the general tab the second line is the file system.

Thanks for your quick reply. the answer is NTFS

First, make sure your drives are formatted with NTFS, then you can set
up usernames in the User Accounts Control Panel and then set
permissions on folders to restrict access to folders on your HD.

XP Home has only simple sharing, while XP Pro has full security
features. In XP Home, boot into Safe Mode and login as Administrator
to access the Security tab.

XP Home only has 1 level of folder sharing - everybody who access across the
network is "Guest" if you make a folder available.

You need XP Pro if you want to configure read access for some and read/write
for others at the folder level.

Plus, if you use NTFS and XP Pro, then you can get file level security also.
But no file level or configurable folder permissions in XP Home, even if you
have NTFS volumes....
