When I create or do a properties on a folder whether on
our network or on my computer it shows read-only. I
uncheck the read-only and close and do another properties
and it is read-only again. We are using Windows XP
Professional. How do I un-check the read only option and
hold it. Also the read-only box is grey but I can still
un-check it?

The read only property on a folder is an "illusion." The attribute bit is
meaningless to all well behaved Windows programs. However, the operating
system uses it to customize folders.

The read only property is active for individual files and can be toggled on
or off. You can select files individually or you can select a group and use
the Properties sheets to remove the RO attribute or you can use the command
line interface.

More info about RO on folders:
You Cannot View or Change the Read-Only or System Attribute of Folders

NOTE: If you use a program that insists on folders not carrying the RO
attribute, I don't recommend using the workaround suggested in this
article. The reason is the same that is stated in the article's "WARNING"
section: Implementing the workaround can break other portions of Windows. A
better approach and if possible, would be finding an application that
behaves and ignores a read only attribute when it appears on folders.
