Folder opening problem

My laptop (running Windows XP) has developed a strange problem. Now,
whenever I attempt to open any of the folders on my desktop the Windows
Explorer search window opens instead. This started right after I had
done a couple of file searches via windows explorer.

Any ideas how to fix this?
