Is it possible to give a folder a name that is recognised and sorted as a
date ie 02/04/06. I know that the forward slash / is not allowed but could
anything else be used to overcome this problem? Naming folders 020406
instead doesn't work of course because it is recognised as just a number.

You could use underscore, as in 02_04_06

Name the folder with a date in the folder name in reverse order, and
with leading zeroes for each element. ie 060402. hyphens are as good as
any to separate the day, month & year - 06-04-02.

You then get folders presented in year, then month, then day order.

I think YY_MM_DD might be better, to ensure that
the years (e.g. 06) are kept together rather than
the days (e.g. 21).

Today DaleNrDudley commented courteously on the subject at

To get XP to sort the way I think is "correct", I put the full
year, month, and day together like this - "2006-04-02". This
method for naming folders, files, everything that I want to
include a date as part of has been very effective for me.

In what way do you want it to be recognised by XP as a date?

The common way to ensure sorting works is to use YYYYMMDD as the naming
convention

Hi again.

I think that the format 2006-04-02 seems to work best for me, not just from
a sorting point of view but it is also easy to read. Thank you all for
helping me.

020406 will work perfectly well for a folder or file name, so not
sure what you're asking here. Personally, I use the format
20060214 but you can add underscores, dashes, lots of things to
the name for separators. Reason I do it the way I showed is so
the dates will sort properly in the folders; most recent will
always be at the top and all in order below that.
Year/month/date works well for me, esp for backups.
