I have a 40Gb External HD (SEAGATE USB 2.0) which has been functioning fine
until today . When I swapped it between 2 PCs I found all of a sudden that
in explorer it had all sorts of weird names and characters AND then I
couldn't access any of those folders either.

I tried to use XP's error checking and that too said the disk was
unrecognizable.

What can I do to recover this situation?

Thanks in advance.

The root folder - I forgot to mention - seems OK files are recognizable and
readable. And I can write to the root folder.

What is the situation when the drive is in the original machine?

Hope this helps.

The SEAGATE is a stock standard external USB 2.0 unit - so it has no
original PC. It is hooked up to 3 different PCs simply to backup files. So
that is why this puzzling - happened just suddenly.
