Folder moves between drives rather than copies

I dragged a folder from my D-drive to a memstick drive. Like all
other Microsoft Windows systems I used, I expected this drag to copy
the folder. Instead, it moved the folder. How can I get the copying
behaviour that I'm more use to? I know that Ctrl-drag performs the
copying that I want, but I consider it unsafe to have move behaviour
in response to an action that normally performs a copy.

Right click and drag. That way you'll always get a dialog box to ask
you what to do. No mistakes.

Salamander can be configured not to do this silly "copy/move/shortcut lotto"
- though why MS will not remove (or allow turning off of) this behavior from
Windows itself I do not understand. There is nothing worse than an action
whose outcome cannot be reliably predicted.

R-click, drag and drop, pick operation desired from the menu.

Bob, Terry,

Is there no way to get rid of the anomalous behaviour with Ctrl-
LeftClick-Drag, and get the proper behaviour for that action? File-
move is not the normal response. From my experience, there is a
normal response (that being File-copy).

We don't know what you have done to your system to break it, alter it.
So, we offer a method that bypasses the issue completely.

Hi Paul,

The Windows default behavior for left click and drag:
On the same drive but to a different folder- MOVE
On another drive - COPY

Ctrl left click and drag will always copy.

Right click and drag will always give you options.

In my opinion, Right click and drag is the failsafe way to manipulate files.

I've inheritted the system, so I guess the answer is that I haven't
done anything to break it...but someone has! I was hoping to find a
way to fix it, more for the sake of convenience and efficiency over
right-clicking. Thanks anyway.

Understood, Terry. It seems that the method for changing the
behaviour of dragging between drives a relatively obscure piece of
Windows knowledge. Sigh. But thanks anyway.

What happens on that system if you hold down Shift while doing your "move".

Actually, I need to short-circuit your question (though your response
is appreciated). I just tried Ctrl-Drag between two hard drives, and
it's a Copy action. I tried variations between different hard drives
and mem stick and cannot duplicate the problem. But the machine has
been rebooted many times since then, and I'm not sure which account I
was using when it happened. In the worst case, the problem was
between the keyboard and the chair :( .

Thank you all for your patient support.

Hey, you're most welcome. All's well that ends well! <grin>
