For some reason, I now have some icons on the desktop that refer to folders.

If I try to delete them, I am told it will delete the folders themselves.

How do I delete just the icon?????

Thanks.

Hi Betty,

How do I delete just the icon?????

In Windows explorer, go to Documents and Settings\<Username>\Desktop,
you will find a regular folder with all the links to your desktop.
Double click the icons that refers to the folders and make sure they
are not really the folders.
When you are sure, righ-click on them and choose delete. They will be
sent to the Recycle bin, where you should left them for a few days in
case they're needed.

Good luck

Thanks, Roger.

It appears this was a duplicate folder containing some files. As I had
them elsewhere, just did as you suggested.

But I now can see that if such an icon contains files, I should just
move to the appropriate spot.....

Again, my appreciation. In over 15 years had never had this problem
before....learn something every day.
