Could somebody please remind me what program I need to make a list of
the individual files within a folder (W98). I have been searching
unsuccessfully all afternoon!

Have a look at RJH Extensions. It will add this facility (and lots more) to
your context (right-click) menu.

From a command prompt:

dir > files.txt

I still use Catfish:

and export the results to a text file. Too bad development stopped on
this program.

alt.msdos.batch for more info on batch files and / or command prompt
things
