folder compacting taking forever

At what point do I pull the plug on this process?

The answer, I anticipate, is never. However, this compacting of a user's
personal folders has been going on for about 20 hours. It started out at
about 1.6GB and is now at 1.3GB. The time stamp on the .PST file has changed
within the last hour, but the size hasn't for about 4 hours. Could this still
be chugging along? I only ask because I'm getting mega-pressure here at the
office to do *something*.

Thanks,

For anyone else who might be going through this, I'll relate the rest of the
story.

I started a chat session with Microsoft's support options (which was
*extremely* bad customer service) and they said that shutting down the
machine, while this process was happening, has a completely different effect
than killing the process through task manager. I think there's supposed to be
a Cancel button available to you from Outlook's compact dialog, but none of
the Outlook windows were getting repainted so that button didn't exist for
me. In any case, shutting down the machine prompted me to "End now" Outlook,
which I did. Upon restart, the .pst file was completely in tact. Total
compacting time was 33 hours, then I did the shut down.
