folder appearance - small hand in icon holds the folder.

Why do some folders show a little had holding the folder. What does the
little hand mean? Can I create a folder that has the little hand? If I
delete a folder that has the little hand (like my docs) and replace it with
a folder that has the same name (but no hand in the icon and same contents,
will it work the same?

The little hand means that folder is shared. Are you on a network? It
would seem that someone has enabled sharing and has shared out
resources, because this is not something that happens all by itself.

You have set those folders as 'shared' in their properties
