Hello,

Any idea what to do after folder and most desktop icons have been changed to a generic image? Reboot did not help. I have plenty of RAM and resources. Win2000 Server SP4.

Any help?

Thanks,

Erik

What do you mean by generic image?

Do you mean user-added icons are missing, and you have just the basics (My
Computer, Network Places, Recycle Bin, et al)that a new user would get?
Assuming that no one else decided to declutter your desktop (I've seen it
happen), the next thing I would check that you still have the regular
profile, and not something like administrator.000\desktop or what have you.

Thanks. My Computer and the other standard icons are fine. Icons to
later-added programs got changed to a brown book with the letter M on it.
Icons of folders in Windows Explorer lost the small yellow folder and became
generic Windows-logo icon.

Any help?

I'm guessing that your icon cache is overloaded. You might try
expanding its size and purging the cache of old, unused icons. There
are several ways to do this, but the following has always worked on my
systems...

1-- download a copy of the ActivIcons (freeware) utility from
http://www.cursorarts.com/ca_aifw.html

2-- in ActivIcons, go to its "Desktop Controls" screen and increase
the icon cache size to 2048 or 4096, and then

3-- rebuild the icon cache. The options for rebuilding the cache are
on 2 small round buttons at the lower/right corner. Shut down any
programs running in the background, then click the round button
farthest to the lower/right corner (your system will reboot, and the
icon cache will be cleaned out).

The TweakUI powertoy from Microsoft also has a "repair icons"
function, though the corrupted icons do come back if the icon cache is
too small.

Thank you all. Problem solved.
