Hi,

To fix this random floppy drive access at boot, follow these steps:

1. Right-Click on My Computer icon.

2. Select Properties and then click on Performance tab.

3. Click on File System button and then on Floppy Disk tab.

4. Uncheck the box "Search for Floppy....".

5. Click Apply and OK.

If the problem still persists, then your system may have a damaged registry
key. The following is the registry key.

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r

To resolve the issue, you need to perform registry modification.

It is suggestible to take a backup before taking the modification steps:

REGISTRY BACKUP:
----------------
Click Start and click on Run.
Type Regedit.
From the Registry menu, click on Export Registry.
Give a destination file (say Regbackup) and save it on to the Desktop.

KEY MODIFICATION:
-----------------
1. Click '+' beside HKEY_CURRENT_USER.

2. Click '+' beside Software.

3. Click '+' beside Microsoft.

4. Click '+' beside Windows.

5. Click '+' beside Current Version.

6. Click '+' beside Policies.

7. Click '+' beside Explorer.

Note: The value of the NoDriveTypeAutoRun entry should be 95 00 00 00, if it
is not, continue to step 3.

8. Double click NoDriveTypeAutoRun.

9. Change the Binary Value to 95 00 00 00.

10.Click OK.

11.Close Registry Editor.

Restart the computer for the changes to take affect.

You must have a different version of Windows XP Pro than I do. Maybe home
version? More likely Windows 95-98-98SE. Right-click on My Computer,
select Properties, and notice there is NO tab labelled "Performance". There
is a tab labelled "Advanced" under which there is a performance section but
it has no option regarding the floppy drive(s).

"Your" explanation is just a ripoff of Microsoft's KB article 272242 at:

Floppy Drive Is Accessed When You Open My Computer
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=272242

Stop pretending the solution is yours when you are just copying a Microsoft
KB article. Instead just refer to the KB article and provide a link to it.
Notice that the KB article is for 95-based version of Windows. I am running
Windows XP and the data value that I have for that same registry key is:

HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Policies\Explore
r
NoDriveTypeAutoRun = 0x00000091 (i.e., hex 91 or decimal 145).

And I don't get floppy drives getting accessed when I open Explorer. 91 hex
is the value mentioned in http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=330135 (for
AutoRun to work for CD drives) which *IS* for Windows XP.

Windows is running it hardware detect on every startup to see if there is
new or changed hardware. That means it will detect the enabled devices. I
suppose Sandman could disable the floppy drive in the BIOS. That's just
short of physically removing the floppy drive. Either way, Sandman won't be
able to use a floppy.

Could be Sandman is running anti-virus software and hasn't checked if there
is an option (that can be disabled) to inspect the floppies on startup
(since that's one way how viruses can be introduced). For example, in
Norton Anti-Virus there are the following 2 options:

|_| Scan all removable media for boot viruses every time it is mounted.
|_| Scan floppy disk in A: for boot viruses when shutting down.

If you don't want Norton's to check for floppy borne viruses on Windows
startup, disable the first option. If you don't want it to check on
shutdown (where the floppy may be bootable and circumvent starting up
Windows so it can do its infection on bootup) then disable the second
option.
