Hi Kim,

Most Macs can read 1.44MB floppy discs formatted in PCs, but it doesn't work
the other way round unless you install some special software on the PC. The
formatting is quite different, but Apple added code to read PC discs - MS
didn't add code to read Mac discs.

Cheers

I am trying to print from a floppy disk which has been formatted in
Macintosh. Can this be done on any computer? I have tried in work by
copying the files on that floppy onto another floppy and then being told it
is corrupted. Can the formatted version in Macintosh be adapted for normal
use? All files are in Word and Excel.

Thanks for that but the disk was already formatted Macintosh but the files
were saved on a non-macintosh computer apparently (according to my daughter)
but now we are unable to print any of the files. Is there no way around this
before she goes back to college? Kim

I can't actually tell what your exact problem is, nor what you did to get in
this situation, but some information:

Win cannot use a floppy formatted for Mac.

The file format for Word and Excel is the same, since Office 97. Mac and
win can open files created on the other one. If you are having problems, try
File | Open instead of double-clicking.

On all platforms, it's a bad idea to open documents from a floppy. Instead
copy them to the hard drive and then work with them.

Floppies corrupt very easily regardless of cross-platform activity.

In addition to the Mac v PC comments, never ever read from, write to or
print from floppy with Word. This is the most certain method of ensuring
document corruption. Copy to the hard disc and work on the document from
there.
