Floppy drive letter assignment

I've just removed the LS-120 drive from my system & put in a regular floppy. I've connected the cable right (after the twist) & activated the "Floppy Drive A" in BIOS

For some reason, my system assigns drive letter "B" upon booting into windows. Disk Management will only see HDDs & optical drives, so I can't use it to change the letter to '"A"

I've tried everything I can think of, including reloading setup defaults. I even checked the BIOS settings in my sister's computer which has the letter correctly allocated, & all the usual settings match mine. WTF?

The 'A' should be plugged into the end of the cable, the
connector in the middle is for the 'B' drive.

Hi

Are you sure you have correctly connected the ribbon cable to the floppy drive port on the mobo

I had a similar problem. You will probably have to edit the registry
and change the letter designation there.

Go to HKLM\SYSTEM\MountedDevices, look for a value named
DosDevices\B: and see if changing the B to A works. Backup up the
registry first.

Thanx for that, Norm, that did the trick. I had an inkling I might have to do something in the registry, but I didn't want to unless there was no other way. But it is now showing up correctly as "A:"

Under the key of "A" in the registry still showed details of my LS-120 in the value data, even though it was disconnected. What had happened was that I cleaned out my system (by disconnecting EVERYTHING) & rebooted only to have a loud crack noise occur. I traced it to the LS-120 & replaced it with a floppy before rebooting

It would seem that perhaps Windows likes devices to be disconnected in the device manager before physically disconnecting them, not that I had any choice in this instance!!
