NEVER directly from Word! Save the file to your hard drive (usually in My
Documents) first. Close Word, put a floppy in the "A" drive, open Windows
Explorer ("Flying Window" key + "E"). Click on the My Documents icon to the
top left to see your file to the right, click and drag the file to the "A"
drive to the left.

Keep in mind that the floppy drive holds about 1.4 MB of information. If
you want to see how large your file is, click the "View" menu with Windows
Explorer open and click "Details". The file size, modified date, name, and
file type will appear to the right.

Never save directly to (or read directly from) a floppy drive from within MS
Word. It is one of the easiest ways there is to trash a document.

I'm assuming that you're talking about from inside MSWord. I'm also
assuming that you're using Windows 95 or later. If these aren't the case,
post back and we'll see about helping more.
When you have a Word Document open, when you hit Save As... (in the File
menu), the save as dialog will come up. There's a box at the top that
probably shows "My Documents" (although, it may be elsewhere, depending on
where you started the Document file from). If you open that box (by clicking
on the triangle to the right of the box), you should see something like 3
1/4" drive (A:). If you select that, you can enter a filename and it will
save to that drive.
An alternative, when you hit save as, just type something like
A:\MyWhatever.doc in the box, it will save directly to the A drive. Of
course, that assumes that A is your floppy drive.
Hope that helps.
