John

Can any one help with a problem with my floppy disk in
win xp pro.
It keeps showing floppy disk controller reporting
unrecognizable error. I have swapped several floppy
disks, ribbons and orientatation. Ive also tried several
disks and I cant come up with any answer. This is also
the second motherboard I have tried thinking it was the
controller. I also get the message place disk in drive A:
sometimes. This one has got me crazed.
Thanks
John

Probably not very helpful, John, but have you checked on the latest driver
for your floppy?

Excerpt:
"Windows XP supports formatting only the 1.44MB disk format.
Three-mode floppy drives (drives that are capable of reading/writing
with 720KB, 1.2MB and 1.44MB 3.5" disks) requires special driver
support, and support for this feature is not included in Windows XP."

There is further info in the link about obtaining a driver and
installing.

Mode 3 drives though are only an old Japanese type, and not likely to be
encountered in a modern machine. But it might be worth checking on BIOS
setup and make sure that Mode 3 support is turned off
