I have a strange problem that just started yesterday.
System is Windows XP Pro SP1 and fully updated w/ all
critical and security patches. Symantec Corporate
AntiVirus installed, fully updated and system scanned &
virus-free.

Whenever I open a file by double-clicking it through the
explorer window, the floppy drive activates as though
trying to find something. After a few seconds, the file
does open in the correct application.

The same thing happens when I start any program, whether
it is via a shortcut on the desktop, the start menu, or
quick-launch bar. Not only is it annoying it is
affecting performances.

Any ideas or info will be appreciated.

at one point you selected to open with, and then when the
choice came up someone selected floppy and checked always
use this to open files of this type box.Try this, control
panel(switch to classic view if you have to),,,double
click folder options,,,view tab,,,reset all folders
button,,,then reset them,,,also restore default button on
the bottom,,,apply ok.Please post back to see if this
works for you,can try other ways if not.

Ummm, sorry, that's not correct. But you are certainly on the right track.

The "Open With..." selection on the context menu refers to software, not
hardware devices. You won't find a floppy drive listed as a choice.

At some point, the OP removed a floppy disk from the drive before closing
whatever file or files (from the diskette) that he was using. Windows is
still trying to access that floppy disk.

So here's what the OP has to do: Put a blank, formatted diskette in the
floppy drive and let Windows try to access it. He'll likely get an error
message, which he should dismiss. Now he can take the floppy out of the
drive and the problem should be gone.
