Floating Cursor

Not sure if I'm in the right group, apologies if not.

Quite suddenly the cursor on my monitor has started floating about for a
moment or two whilst pages are loading.I've checked for virus's etc. but
everything seems clear.

Could someone please help a novice, here.

This usually happens with optical mice, but isn't related to loading web
pages. On surfaces which have very little variation in its patter (like a
solid color on a hard surface) it has trouble reading changes in its position.
Sometimes, even optical mice need pads to rest on.
