Flash player irritation

About once a month I get a pop-up message telling me that a
Macromedia flash player update is now available. Also a little
icon of a silver circle with the letter 'f' appears in my tray.

I don't want the update - any ideas on how to stop these
reminders greatly appreciated.

Check your startup folder for any programs that might check for the
update, if found disable.

No - the reminder isn't coming from anything listed by
StartupManager or in the Windows task manager.

I don't get that problem but I do frequently get a message on
websites which tell me I haven't got Flash installed, whereas I know
it is installed and the .OCX is there. I have to go through a process
of uninstalling and re-installing it to solve the problem.

Macromedia Flash defaults to turning your mike and camera on (if you
have them) and has its own cookie system that bypasses any effort to
delete them. Spyware in my opinion . . .

I use something called "Startup control panel" V2.8 by mike lin. It
combs the registry and lists things set to start with windows from the
registry (Run Once, HKCU/Run, HKLM/Run) as well as the usual start-up
items.

Don't want to update Flash Player so that it is no longer vulnerable to a
malicious flash file? Then uninstall it.

Start->(Settings->)Control Panel->Add/Remove Programs
Find the Macromedia Flash Player entry and uninstall it.

Adam;

I do believe the OP is shooting for something more prophylactic than
abstentious. I could be wrong...
