I found a thumb drive in an empty office building and started using it. I
put a bunch of infor on it and now when I plug it in it shows the thumb
drive and the drive letter but once I try to open it there are no files.
When I right click and go to properties it shows the correct properties,
such as free space & used space, but it won't show me the actual files when
I try to open the thumb drive. Also it has no "volume name" when I right
click & go to my properties, could that be the problem. If so how do I find
out what the "volume name" should be? There are no identifying marks on it
so I don't know who the manufacturer is to ask. I'm using Windows XP SP2.
Please help, thanks.

Ask the original owner of the drive.

I think you should first format the thumb drive and see if that goes
successfuly. If yes, then try saving/reading data on it. If it doesn't
work, try to check the drive for bad sectors.
