Hi,

Are there any side effects by using the FIXBOOT command
from Win2K Recovery Console?

I read the following sentence somewhere:
"Use Fixboot, unless you've been using linux or other
external boot loaders."

What is the meaning of "External boot loaders" in that
sentence?

Thanks

1.) Hard to say without any detail of the issue.

2.) Vcom system commander and the like.

Thanks.

1) we get the following error at POST screen:

Err 5: Error finding VFLOPPY.SYS
Err 8: Fake floppy driver not found
Press any key to boot active partition.

When I press any key, the machine boots up fine and
everything is working.

If you need more detail, please refer to the
subject "Master Boot Record" under "Command Prompt
Administration".

2) So, is an external boot loader any tool that is used
for creating partitions, resizing partitions and managing
the OS?

| Thanks.

* Sounds like a 'drive image' problem.

Also try creating a boot disk. For the floppy to successfully boot Windows
2000 the disk must contain the "NT" boot sector. Format a diskette (on an NT
machine, not a DOS/Win9x, so the NT boot sector gets written to the floppy),
then copy ntldr, ntdetect.com, and boot.ini to it; and possibly
ntbootdd.sys. Edit the boot.ini to give it a correct ARC path for the
machine you wish to boot.

* No they replace the inbuilt windows boot loader. Something like this.

"Also try creating a boot disk. For the floppy to
successfully boot Windows
2000"
1) So, if I boot to Win2K from a boot diskette, would all
the applications function as if I had booted normally from
the hard drive (this machine runs Exchange 2000 Server)?
And then I could proceed with the cloning process?
Couldn't I create the boot disk just by using Windows2K
Backup utility?

2) Are virtual floppy diskettes external boot loaders?

Thanks

* I don't know what you're doing here. I thought we were addressing the
error messages at boot.

* No, backup doesn't perform this function.

Dear friends:

You should do what Patrick recommends for any WinXP, Win2k or WinNT
installation you have ASAP, before is too late and a disaster happens.
You should add also any "??ldr" file, or "*.bin" file (specially if
the "*" part of the name contains the words "BOOT"), plus the files
BOOTSECT.DOS, MSDOS.SYS, IO.SYS, CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT (if you
have them), all from the "C:\" subdirectory.

Keep this floppy in a very safe place, and have duplicated copies of
it. Test the diskette booting from it periodically.

"I don't know what you're doing here. I thought we were

I am sorry. I think I caused some miscommunication here.
I should have mentioned, that when getting the error
message, if I press any key the machine boots up fine and
everything works, except I can't clone the machine. The
cloning requires that I reboot, but the error message
prevents booting into the imaging software - which is at
DOS. So, does using a boot diskette still suffice? If it
does, I assume that I should create the boot diskette and
copy those system files to it, using a different machine
than the one that gives the error message. And the
machine could be either a WinXP or Win2K?

Thanks

So these articles didn't correct the problem?

I haven't tried them yet. But, I am a bit cautious,
because they apply to Drive Image. I am using
DeployCenter 5.01.

OK, then the boot disk should work fine for you.

Probably doesn't matter.
