I have been asked to fit a DVD drive to a Dell PC.

On opening the case I find that there is no sound lead connecting the drive
to the M/b.

Do Dell have their own system or am I just out of date.

Sound leads are still used to connect optical drives to the sound card or to
the motherboard if using on-board sound. Has the Dell got a sound card? Is
there already a CD drive installed in the Dell with a sound lead connected
to it? You can only have one optical drive connected to sound, as far as I
know.

THe Dell does not have a separate soundcard.
There is no lead from the existing DVD drive.

In my PC I have two DVD's fitted and they are connected to my Chaintech m/b.
Both play sound.
My recollection is that I have connected to the m/b in the past.

Apparently, the Dell sound card driver supports Digital Audio Extraction
and there is no need to attach a separate audio cable.

Without a sound lead I don't think you will be able to hear Audio CDs
directly. You can of course rip them to a .wav file and hear them using
WMP.

On my Dell the sound connector on the MB is marked J9C1 and is between
a PCI connector and the MB edge adjacent to a connector to the front
panel audio sockets marked J9C2.

There was no CD input lead when I got the PC.

I think you may be able to get a two-into-one CD audio connector, or
make one using a 10Kohm resistor in each CD channel lead, connected
together to each single input channel (four resistors in total for two
CD inputs from two channels from each CD).

You dont need one. As long as your running 2000 or XP and the drive is
Digital Audio Extraction enabled which all are then thats it

Thanks to all.

You are exactly right David.

I had to try it out so I disconnected the sound lead on an old PC I use
occasionaly
and sure enough no sound lead is needed.

"I never knew that"!!! ***********and I suspect I am not alone.
