Which version of Outlook was the first to include a contact database, and
how useful is it, i.e., are people generally pleased with it or is it a
dog's breakfast?

Since you probably won't be using Outlook 97 or earlier, note that OL
2000/XP/2003 have very good contacts folder features - what is it you're
really looking at/wanting to do?

Thanks for the replies. If I go with the most current release, for the
purposes of maintaining a general purpose customer contact database for a
small company, can anyone give me some idea of how capable the program is of
handling this? I've toyed with ACT and it looks like much, much more than I
need. Further, too much learning curve time will prevent my employees from
using ACT or at least using it effectively. I think that a simpler database
will serve our needs better. The most comprehensive program in the world is
useless if people hate it or are afraid of it. I would rather work with a
simpler program that my crew can handle easily. Any thoughts on this?

First question is - what do you need to do? A lot of companies find that a
public contacts folder will suffice....
