I am trying to connect my desktop PC to my Laptop through a firewire
connection, for some the laptop and computer will not connect. The status of
the firewire connection on both the desktop and laptop show connected, but
when i try to ping the ip addresses neither of them work. Both the desktop
and laptop are also connected to my wireless network.

I've read through several posts about similar issues, but i haven't found
anything that works yet.

Thanks in advance.

Make sure that both Firewire connections have IP addresses in the same
subnet and that they aren't firewalled. If there's a network bridge
that contains the Firewire connection on either computer, right-click
and delete the network bridge.

Ok i've tried disabling the firewall(windows sp2 firewall) on both ends and
it doesn't seem to help. I set the laptop to 169.254.1.1 and the desktop to
169.254.1.2 with manually configured ip addresses. They just can't ping each
other. I've also tried repairing the connection and that outputs an error
message of something about clearing ARP cache.
