Firewire (1394) problem

Mike

I am stumped about how to get Windows XP Professional to
connect to my Canon DV camcorder (ZR 45MC).

I am running XP Pro on a new, home-built computer with a
3.0 GHz (hyperthreading)Pentium 4 and Intel D865PERL
motherboard (with onboard IEEE 1394). The setup has 1
gig of PC3200 Kinsgston RAM. All Windows Update upgrades
have been installed, and the system is otherwise working
flawlessly.

When I connected the Canon DV camcorder I first got a
message with Windows looking for the 61883.sys file. I
located and installed that file. Now the Found New
Hardware Wizard first looks for the software for an AV/C
Subunit, then reports "Cannot Install this Hardware."

The camcorder's LCD displays DV IN, as it should when
connected to a computer via firewire. The camcorder
works fine and connects via USB flawlessly for uploading
still images from its SD memory card. Canon assures me
that no special drivers should be required.

Do I need a different IEEE 1394 driver? The screenshots
I now see are attached, plus the screenshot showing the
IEEE 1394 driver. Intel's documentation for the
motherboard says a Microsoft patch for 1394 is required
for Windows XP. The patch has been included in the
Windows XP Service Pack 1 release and is available from
Microsoft's support web site," but my new copy of XP Pro
came with Service pack 1 (plus, as I said above, I've
downloaded and installed all of the updates).

I have searched the Windows XP Pro Knowledge Base and
other sources but I haven't found any solutions that work
for me. Any ideas? (Or questions?)

Thanks,

MLN

Hi

I have two firewire ports on my machine, one is Texas Instrument Firewire 1394 card and the other is from my audigy sound card, both working fine with XP Pro Sp1

Try this way, go to device manager, click the firewire 1394 and than clcik driver, in the open windows, click update drivers and let windows search it for you.
If windows cannot update the drivers, boot in save mode and logon as administrator, go to device manager and uninstall the firewire 1394, reboot and let windows serach and re-install the drivers

Hope it helps

Pete

Go to the Intel site for the 865 mobo and download the
correct drivers. That chipset is newer than XP so you need
the correct drivers from the source, Intel.

Thanks for your replies, but I tried both fixes
recommended below without success. Should I reformat the
drive from scratch?

Thanks,

Mike

Open device manager and delete the firewire card (ports) and
reboot, before you start reinstalling Windows.

I have the same problem and I found the 61883 file but an error message says that I need to insert a disk labeled "Windows XP Home Edition CD-ROM." I have several that came with our computer but the only one that actually says "Windows XP Home Edition" is a reinstallation CD that has a warning that it is only to be used to reinstall the operating system, and is not for reinstallation of drivers. The other ones say, "Application" or "Drivers and Utilities." Should I use them?

Thanks for the link but its a lot to wade through. Can anyone answer my question about the Windows XP disk?

You should let it search the Windows XP Home Edition CD. The OS knows
the file that it is looking for exsits on that CD, so that is why it is
asking for it.

Thanks to everyone who replied with ideas, but in the end the only
thing that worked was to re-install XP on top of the existing
installation. Doing so was relatively quick and easy, and the Canon
DV was installed without incident afterwards. I wish that I had tried
this solution earlier rather than spending so much time researching
and trying other fixes.
