Although logged on as administrator, I can't enable the
firewall on my AOL dialup connection. When I click the
Properties option on the highlighted AOL connection in
the Network Connections window nothing happens except
that the right-clicked menu disappears. Nothing also
occurs when I click the option Change Settings of this
Connection under Network Tasks. Also, there's a red
check mark in the icon that appears to the left of the
Change Settings ... option. Mine is a stand-alone
computer, no network installed. Help!

i had a similar problem when i was with AOL. AOL disables the connection
properties so u can't tamper with the settings. I never managed to find a
way around it. my only advice is find a new ISP, as AOL really arn't that
good. Sorry I can't be of more help.

This is normal for the AOL adapter. It does not allow you to see its
properties. Use a third party firewall instead such as Zone Alarm. The red
check mark means this is your default connection. This connection will be
launched whenever you select an option that requires being online (clicking
an internet shortcut or a link in a saved article are examples).

You first and most pressing problem is that you have AOL on your system.
AOL replaces many critical system files and then hijacks many other system
protocols. You should consider getting a real ISP and getting rid of
AOL...unfortunately, the only way to thoroughly clean your system of AOL is
to format and re-install.
