Questions like this get opinions, not answers. And recognizing that
*every* product has its partisans, if you get enough answers, you will
get recommendations for every firewall out there.

That said, I've been happy with ZoneAlarm here.

I've used the free version of Zone Alarm for quite a few years without any
problems. Of course, you are already 'partially' protected by the XP
firewall but it only scans incoming sources not outgoing, whereas Zone Alarm
scans both incoming and outgoing. Check this link for the download details:

Just as an addition to my last post, Sarah when you click on the link I
provided you will go to the zone alarm download page. Click the download
button and a new window will appear. At the bottom of this window you will
see two options:

1/ Free security suite with trialpay
2/ I only want the basic zone alarm protection.

Click the second option 'I only want the basic zone alarm protection.' This
will then download a small setup file. Click the setup file (you must be
connected to the internet) then follow the onscreen instructions, selecting
your operating system etc. Zone Alarm will then download to your PC.

Freeware, lightweight... editable rules to block/allow traffic, but
it's ready to work out-of-the-box. Caution: By default allows all
outgoing traffic unlike Zonealarm.

I've tested it on a couple test-your-firewall, scan-your-ports sites
(sorry don't remember them) and it had a 100% success rate.

Hello:

While Zone Alarm - esp. the free edition - seems to be among the most
popular firewall solutions, I have read of and tried 2 other approaches.

One is to use Ashampoo's free edition firewall along with Win XP SP2's
built-in firewall. The XP firewall protects scans incoming sources, while
the free Ashampoo firewall scans outgoing sources. Thus, together, they
provide the 2-way incoming and outgoing scanning of Zone Alarm free. I did
try it and it worked, but it seems that a cleaner solution would still to be
to use a single firewall product such as Zone Alarm, providing 2-way
protection. (Note that the Ashampoo Pro Firewall does provide 2-way
protection, but it is not free.) See:
http://www2.ashampoo.com/webcache/html/1/product_2_0050_.htm .

Another free firewall - one that was named PC Mag's Online Editor's Choice -
is the Comodo Free Firewall. While a free product, it provides the
additional protection found in products such as Zone Alarm Pro. See:
http://www.personalfirewall.comodo.com/ .

O.J.

Do not try Comondo Firewall 2.4 if you are replacing some other
firewall software, besides XP SP2 one. One of the "suggested" XP
Security Center fix (to get Comodo FW listed in it) is to completely
wipe the WMI repository folder. This then causes a HUGE problem with
the anti-virus status and automatic updates (at least on my PC.)
