Hi Everyone,

I want to enable my built-in Firewall in Windows XP and as per Windows help for Firewall says "Open Network Connections and in Network Connections, Click the Dial-up, LAN or High-Speed Internet connection that you want to protect, and then, under Network Tasks, click Change settings of this connection.

Nothing is poping up when I clicked on "Change settings of this connection" option in the Network Tasks list. I am using AOL for internet connection.

Did anyone have any idea.

-SKC.

If you have AOL:

America Online installs its own connection settings that override
the ones that come with Windows XP. America Online's
connection settings don't include a way to turn on Windows XP's
built-in firewall.

Visit the following web site for instructions on downloading
a FREE firewall program for your computer.

go to Start/Settings/Network Connections
you should see whatever connection you have setup in the
window... right-click, go to properties.
from there click advanced tab... check the option to
enable firewall.

As the op stated, they are using AOL. You cannot enable XP's firewall on an
aol connection as aol uses proprietary connectiods. The only options is for
them to install a third party software as Carey mentioned.

Greetings --

If you're using AOL, you'll either need to find a 3rd party
firewall that is compatible with AOL, or switch to a real ISP that is
compatible with the real Internet. This is because AOL is an on-line
content provider that ignores international Internetworking standards
in favor of its own proprietary products, and has deliberately made
its connection software incompatible with both WinXP's built-in
firewall and WinXP's Internet Connection Sharing feature. AOL's
proprietary connection applet is deliberately designed to preclude
your setting/adjusting any of its properties, to include
enabling/disabling WinXP's ICF and ICS.

Instead *right* click that icon, take Properties and on the Advanced
page check the top box to 'Protect My Computer'

As Carey, Phil and Bruce says, I need Third Party Firewall software as AOL disables XP built-in Firewall. With your experience could any one of you suggest best and free Firewall softwares time being, later I will plan to buy some

Thanks everyone.

In my opinion the free version of Zone Alarm is the best. Easy to use and it
does outgoing and incoming blocking.

I use zone alarm pro and wouldn't use anything else except a hardware
firewall.

Kerio Personal Firewall is also free plus it supports ICS whereas Zone
Alarm Free does not.

Cool, kerio does ics. That's good to know. ZA pro does too but its not free.
Thanks for the info.

Yep, that's why I use it at home; I live way out in the beautiful
boonies where all I can get is dialup or overly expensive DSL. I prefer
version 2.1.4 if you can get it. The lastest version (last I checked) is
kinda sucky looking :)

I also use KPF at work in a semi-configured state to get alerts when
worm activity hits my workstation; I can record the source IP and track
down the infected computer using a few other tools.

Steve

My free version of ZA has a trusted zone, in which I can set
my local network, including ICS.

Interesting. When I checked Zone Alarm Free about a year ago it was very
explicit in telling me that the full version was required to support
ICS. Perhaps they have changed that since then.
