i am using a d-link network card to connect to a cable modem but when i
press the settings button to configure the firewall i get a quick flash that
says "please wait" and thats it! the actual dialogue box never comes up. if
i reinstall the connection i can accses it once and thats it same problem
again?

i have admin rights and running xp pro.

please help....

You do not need to configure a firewall when connecting to
a modem if the connection is via a router. The router itself
acts as a firewall. You should only enable a firewall on a
computer that connects directly to the modem or router via
a CAT5 cable.

i am not sure if my connection is via router? exuse my ignorance but what is
a router? my connection is just from my network card to my ntl cable modem
and then down the cable line? but surley i should still be able to configure
my firewall because it stops me from using e-donkey p2p?

You said, in your original post:

This indicates you're not using a router. A router is a box that plugs into
your cable modem and into which you plug your PC. It routes the Ethernet
packets between your PC (and any other PCs conected to it) to the Internet
via your cable modem. Most routers contain a built-in firewall.

If you cannot enable the firewall XP supplies, download one of the several
freeware ones, like Zone Alarm
<http://download.zonelabs.com/bin/free/1001_cnet_zdnet/zaSetup_37_202.exe>
or Kerio Personal Firewall <http://www.kerio.com/dwn/kpf2-en-win.exe>.
