I have told Windows XP Prof SP2 to stop monitoring my firewall settings, but every time I re-boot my PC it yells at me about the fact I have the firewall turned off. I have a firewall on my router and don't need (or want) then windows firewall. Is this a bug in SP2?

A hardware router is not enough on its own.. a software firewall blocks
ingoing and outgoing, and will give you options.. if your computer attempts
to send outgoing material, a software firewall will make you aware and ask
if it is ok to proceed.. a hardware firewall might just let it through
without any warning.. it is a good idea to run a software firewall
regardless of the fact that you sit behind a router..

Go-> Control Panel -> Security Center-> (on the left) Change the way Security
Center Alerts Me. Disable all alerts if you don't want Ms. Auto download,
Firewll,
AntiVirus.

The Windows Firewall in XPSP2 only blocks unsolicted in bound traffic
though. We do not look at out bound data. We basically just wanted to put
some protetcion in place for new out of the box systems or for those system
upgarding to SP2 and had no Firewall protection to at least turn on the
functionality by default.
It would add defence in depth by also having a software firewall enabled.

I understand exactly why a basic firewall is included in the package, and
can also imagine the flow of lawsuits from the various firewall suppliers if
MS included a full software firewall.. however, there are many out there who
do not seem to understand that there can be as much outgoing as incoming..
quite how one goes about educating them, I am not sure.. there is also a
misconception that SP2, having been released as a major security update, is
essentially just an update of the original XP firewall..

You would think that there would be an easy way to mass educate considering
all of the media options available, but it is so easy to avoid reading or
seeing anything.. add to that those people who choose to be selective about
the phrases that they extract from the written or spoken word, and it is
easy to see why so many are mislead..

oh well.. damn the torpedoes, full speed ahead..
