Since getting the new computer with WindowsXP Home Ed. I have been
having a lot of e-mail with attachments that the program will not open.
Says something about not being able to find a program to open it with.
Only clue as to where to start using is in windows/settings/users.
Pointers, please?

What is the extension of the e-mail attachment. It sounds like Windows
does not know what program will run that file type. Even if you have a
program that will open that file, it does no good in Windows does not know
it.

Install whatever application is required to open the types of
attachments you're receiving.

What files are these? It may be that your firewall will change file
extensions (zone alarm does this, i believe), or it may be that your new
computer doesn't have all the programs installed that your old one had.

What file extension are the attachments? You may need some additional
software or may need to associate them when something. If they just are not
available there is a setting in outlook express options under security.
uncheck the box that says "do not allow attachments to be saved".

Hi,
Some of them are .wav files which were opened in the past and I would
expect to open now. This is mostly happening in Yahoo.

All the programs that were there before are there now. Will check the
file extension list to see who is opening what.

You may still have the program to play wave files, but Windows may not
know it.

Try this for a start. "Save" one of the wave files and then double
click on that file. Does it play? If not then right click on it and then
associate it with a program that will play those files. Note, there are
many different programs that will play wave files.

BTW your e-mail program does not play the files, it just sends the file
to Windows and let's Windows figure out how to play it.

I just had the problem occur again while trying to open a .pps file.

C:\DOCUME~1\USER\LOCALS~1\TEMP\506z10b0. could not be saved, because the
source file could not be read.
Then told me to try again later or contact systems administrator. No
systems administrator.
Hunted for any file with any of that and came up with all sorts of things.
Still looking.

A .wav file is opened by windows media player. Go to control
panel ---add/remove programs---on left side click add/remove windows
components. Scroll down list and put X on windows media player. Install it.
