OK. I'm angry. The first copy of this thread got erased from microsoft.public.windowsxp.hardware after only one day in the newgroup and no solution. (And don't tell me it's already been posted/answered before, cuz I looked, and it hasn't.) (Newsgroup monitor/moderator, e-mail me!

PROBLEM

Windows sometimes recognize my external firewire hard drives (to be refered to as xHD from now on), and sometimes it doesn't. Everytime I turn on or plug in the xHD, Windows chimes to indicate it noticed that a new hardware has been plugged in, but Windows does not always put an icon in the My Computer for the xHD, even after waiting for a while. Rebooting Windows & trying again, nor rebooting Windows with xHD on & plugged in does not help at all

KNOWNS

-The problem lies entirely with Windows
-Both xHD and firewire port are working fine
-xHD is already partitioned and formated which Windows can access when working
-Problem started with an Windows update that had to deal with OHCI or UHCI in regards to USB behavior

Since you seem to have traced the problem to an update, have you checked
Add/Remove Programs in Control Panel to see if it is listed; you can cross
reference by checking your install history in the left pane at Windows
update. Since you can trace the problem to that update, it would appear your
setup is having an issue with it and it might not have even been necessary
for you.

As to the removal, the server has had some problems in the last few weeks
and some messages have been lost as they reset the server. In fact, your
previous message may actually still be on the server. If you were posting
using a newsreader as opposed to through the web interface, you could do a
reset of the server in your newsreader. If the message is still on the
Microsoft server, it would download again.

It's been a long while since that update. I can't remember which it was, and I can't find it now. I believe it is now part of a larger package that combined several updates. As I recall, the update did improve how my USB devices behave (mainly during a reboot). I also recall having to format my hard drive and reinstalling Windows around that time

I'm not sure the removal program is reliable either. I tried a Windows hotfix Q329256 that I've read help someone with a similar problem a month ago. It only made Windows stop trying to add the hard drive icon to My Computer--the Safely Remove Hardware systemtray icon no longer pops up after the hard drive was detected. I had it removed successfully, but Windows still does not attempt to put the hard drive icon like before. Result is I never get an icon for my external hard drive any more from now on.

I still see your old post (from 2/5/04). You even responded to someone who
answered you!

Could it just be that no one who knows the answer has read it yet?

If it was a long while ago, then System Restore would probably be useless.
Perhaps the following might help.

The following assumes you have an actual XP CD as opposed to a restore CD or
restore partition supplied by your PC manufacturer.

Go to Start, type sfc /scannow in the run box and press enter. Note, there
is a space between sfc and the forward slash. You will be asked for your XP
CD. Be aware, upon inserting the CD the XP setup screen may appear, this is
not a part of sfc /scannow, rather it is being invoked by autorun. Simply
minimize the screen and allow sfc to continue.

If SFC fails to resolve the issue, you might check with the manufacturer of
the external drives to see if they can be of assistance.

*Sigh* I wish I had an actual XP CD. I only have the manufacture system restore CDs. :(

Any other suggestions?

I can understand your not wanting to use the restore CD, I assume your
reluctance is based on not having a recent backup.

I can't guarantee having an retail version of XP, enabling you to perform
the tasks I've described would resolve this issue. However, at some point,
you're going to need it again. The long and the short of it is, you have no
tools. You can try removing the drive and reinstalling it or you can try to
backtrack and see if you can uninstall the possibly offending hotfix or
remove all of them for that matter since you seem to have traced the issue
to that possibility. Beyond that, all I can offer is to try the drive
manufacturer's tech support.
