Hi,
I installed a zonealarm pro on my windows xp and I'm
getting one alert after the other about NetBIOS Name
having been blocked and all I can push is ok. How do I
know that I don't actually need them for microsoft to
communicate with me? How do I get them if I do?
Any suggestion would be greatly appreciated, thanks.

Hello!
In Windows XP you have the possibility to disable NetBIOS
over TCP/IP. You do this by right-clicking on My Network
Places and selecting Properties. Then right-click on the
appropriate Local Area Connection icon, and select
Properties. Next, click on Internet Protocol (TCP/IP) and
Properties.
Now click Advanced, and select the WINS tab. There you can
enable or disable NetBIOS over TCP/IP.The changes take
effect immediately without rebooting the system.

You will get an event in your even log if you do not also
disable the TCP/IP NetBIOS Helper Service service. You can
Disable this service in Control Panel > Administrative
Tools > Services if desired

That NetBIOS port is the one that the BLAST worm and other nasties try
to get in through. It is only wanted if you are supporting a rather
old-fashioned Local network. So leave it blocked. ZA Pro's Firewall
High should be in use; then you can permit specific other ports is you
have a specific need for them

I'm getting around 5 or 6 hits a minute still trying to get in through
it

Right click your Zone Alarm icon in the system tray and
select "Restore Zone Alarm Control Center."
Then on the Alerts and Logs tab, turn the alert pop-up OFF.
It will still log the port probes but won't bother you with
all the traffic and pop-ups. It will still alert when a new
or changed program tries to connect to the Internet.

BTW, I turn all protocols except TCP/IP off in the
connection properties.
