with the XP Home version, do I need to purchase an
additional antiVirus and Firewall program, or is updating
the XP security on line enough?

You definitely want a third-party anti-virus program and I recommend you
get a third-party personal firewall. And keep up-to-date on critical
Windows updates.

And, in addition to Kent's advise I would add that even
all of that is not enough if you use unsafe practices, such
as always running as an admin and downloading and
loading everything that just looks cool.

I would actually recommend running more than one virus scanner, although
I would not recommend having more than one resident. No virus scanner
will catch everything, but I do prefer the kapersky labs scanner as my
resident one. As far as a firewall, Kerio or ZoneAlarm are two of the
better ones unless you want to pay a fortune.

You will absolutely need to get an antivirus program as XP does nt include
one. Whether to get an additional firewall is a metter of prefence. XP has a
built in firewall (Internet Connection firewall ICF) that will help protect
your PC. It doesn't have all the bells and whistles that many 3rd party
firewalls have, but it protects your PC as well.
