Im new to computers, is there any advantage to using firefox browser over
Internet Explorer browser?

Some people think it's faster (it does start rendering a webpage faster,
though I think total page time is about the same). Others think it is more
immune to viruses (which I kind of doubt). Since it is free, why not try it
out to see if you like it.

Functionally compared to IE7 there are virtually identical but as mentioned
firefox seems less susceptable to viruses (until it becomes more popular).
Having said that hackers seem less keen to target firefox because it is open
source and MS is a big money making corporation!

I think it is faster.

The user interface is better than IE7
(in IE7 you can't choise anything yourself)

You can even make your own skin, take a look at this:
http://firefox.osterud.name (my very minimal skin).

And with IE TAB plugin you can switch between Gecko rendering
(Firefox) and IE rendering (for IE dependant pages), but still with
the user interface from Firefox..

With some tweaking it is MUCH faster than both IE6 and IE7 (use all 3)

Questions like this get opinions, not answers. Some people will tell you
yes, others no. Some will recommend a browser that's not either one (for
example, I prefer Maxthon to either).

My view is that you should never rely on anyone else's opinion about a
matter like this. Try them both (and Maxthon, too) and decide for yourself
which *you* prefer.

There MAY be many tech reasons, but I just like the layout better.

Be forewarned that some site wont work with FF but it has a neat capability
to redirect desired sites to IE.

One obvious site is www.microsoft.com guess why?

After using Netscape since there was a Netscape, I recently switched
to Firefox (I keep IE7 icon on my desktop, but seldom use it). I tried
it for a week because more & more websites weren't working well with
Netscape 7.2. After the week, I completely removed Netscape from my
computer. Excellent results with Firefox and it is much faster than
Netscape and I haven't hit one website that was a problem.

There are a few websites that will give problems, very few and (I
think) getting fewer all the time. MS, of course, doesn't give a **&*
about cross-browser compatibility.

One reason I *really* like FF2 is that when a problem is discovered,
the Mozilla people will release a fix *very* quickly. And FF will
detect the presence of the fix, download it and apply it
automatically. It will ask you if you want to apply the fix and
restart right now. Say "yes", it will shut down the browser, apply the
fix, restart the browser and restore the pages you were looking at
when it went down. Absolutely painless updating!

Hi Tim and all,

For sites that *require* IE such as Windows Update, there's an FF extension
called IETab that will allow these IE sites to function in FF. Install the
IETab extension and you will see and icon in the status bar at the bottom
left. Simply click on the FF icon and it will change to an IE icon. Right
click on the icon and sites can be set to always open in an IE Tab. Also if
you look at all running process, you will not see iexplorer.exe running when
an IE Tab is open.

center, with FF with no problem. . .

I think may of their pages work on FF or other Gecko-based browses,
but they put little or no effort into making sure that will happen.
And frequently, the pages work differently in the different browsers,
So even if a page works in FF, it offers more features in IE. The real
PITA in that is that they use the "User Agent" string to determine the
browser, then base which features to display based on that. They make
no attempt to determine what the browser actually supports. So,
frequently features are dropped in FF that FF would actually have no
problem with.

Install IETAB for those sites (will use IE renderer inside Firefox).
That works on ALL IE dependant sites (even on Microsoft Update :-)
