I get an error on upstart (XP SP2) telling that Windows had a problem
related to firedaemon.exe. What is this, and how can I get rid of it?

If you want to get ride of the program. open add/remove program and try to
uninstall if you see it there. If that doesnt work, click on start button on
the desktop and clik search.
1.click on "ALL FILES AND FOLDER"
2. Type "firedaeman"
3.Delete everthing that you see relating to "firedaeman"

If you have firedaemon and are asking what it is, chances are you got
more problems than you are aware of. My guess is that your computer
has been compromised and it is being used as an FTP or other type of
server for distributing movies, music, and/or software.

A couple of years back firedaemon was very popular for hackers once a
system was compromised because it allowed them to set a server program
to run as a windows service(in fact that is all firedaemon is, a
service setter/manager).

Things you need to do and i am assuming you have a broadband internet
connection.

1) GET A CABLE/DSL ROUTER IMMEDIATELY if a home user, firewall if a
corporate one.
2) RELOAD YOUR OPERATING SYSTEM, CLEAN INSTALL (FIREDAEMON CAN BE
CLEANED OFF BUT YOU DO NOT KNOW HOW YOUR SYSTEM HAS BEEN COMPROMISED
AND WHAT ELSE IS ON IT, PROBABLY A TROJAN OR TWO, OR HUNDRED)
3) PATCH,PATCH, AND PATCH SOME MORE.
4) TURN ON WINDOWS FIREWALL
5) INSTALL ANTIVIRUS AND KEEP IT UP TO DATE ON DEFINITIONS.

Good Luck
