I am currently without my wowexec.exe file and cannot run some programs without it. However I also do not have my recovery disks nor any other computers I can get the file, and so on. Does anybody know how I may go about getting that file? It is unavailable in the windows download section, and I cannot find anywhere on the net to download it. Any help I can get on this topic will be much appriciated.

Take a floppy to the library. Maybe they have a PC running Windows XP.

Have you reinstalled your video drivers?
That file is related to your video driver, ATI if I remember
correctly.

You can't find wowexec.exe or you get an error message saying
wowexec.exe can't be found??

wowexec.exe
Should be in:
C:\WINDOWS\system32
and
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache

wowexec.exe is used in conjuction with ntvdm.exe to run old DOS
applications.

[[MS-DOS and 16-bit Windows programs actually run as a Win32 process. The
program that creates the virtual MS-DOS environments for these to run in
(NTVDM.EXE) is a Win32 program. A virtual DOS machine (VDM) is created for
the program, so it thinks that it is running on a machine by itself.
However, the virtual machine is a normal 32-bit Windows NT process and is
subject to the same rules of preemptive multitasking as is other programs.
However, this only applies to MS-DOS programs. ]]

[[To run 16-bit Windows applications, NT uses a VDM that contains an extra
software layer called the Win16 on Win32 (WOW) layer. Although the VDM for
Windows shares some of the code for MS-DOS VDM, all Windows applications
share the same VDM. The reason this is done is to simulate the environment
that 16-bit Windows applications run in. Because Windows applications might
want to communicate with one another, a single VDM is used. Each 16-bit
application runs as a thread of the VDM; however, the WOW layers ensures
that only one of these threads is running at any given time. ]]

FILE INFORMATION:

Process File: wowexec or wowexec.exe
Process Name: Windows On Windows Execution Process

is started by NTVDM, which starts every time you run a 16-bit program.

No, WOW is "Windows on Windows". It provides support for 16-bit
applications (so, more accurately, it should be "Windows 16-bit on
Windows 32-bit").

HOW TO: Identify a 16-bit Program in Windows XP
http://support.microsoft.com/?id=320127

Yes, the file is missing and programs I try to use that require it give me the error message. I'd previously tried looking for it in the specified folders and could not locate it. I just wish Microsoft had somewhere to dl programs like that. However they probably were not taking into consideration inept people like myself losing their backup cd's. ;-) Thank you all for your input. I might have to try the library stop mentioned in the first reply... If however, someone could spare me that I'll be eternally grateful. :-)

Since you're using CDO you may not even *see* this, but attached is a zipped
wowexec.exe.

When you run the System File Checker (SFC) via "sfc /scannow", it
doesn't reappear? When you go under C:\Windows\System32\DLLcache,
there's no copy of wowexec.exe there?

wowexec.exe is part of direct x, though I'm not sure, but try downloading
direct x runtime, might fix it there

Sorry I have been so long in replying.
Wesley, I was wondering about that zipped file you mentioned in one of your previous entries. I couldn't find it (and you seemed to have your doubt that I would). What am I lacking that would hinder me from seeing that? Is there anything I could do to correct that and then get the file? :::blinks stupidly::: CDO?? ;-) And here I was thinking I knew everything. I know my account is overdrawn, but I would appriciate any more assistance you could give me.

Thanks,
Desertranger
