When I search for a document by clicking the Open icon, is there a way that Word will highlight all of the documents that contain the unique combination of letters that I enter? In an earlier version of Word I could enter any part of the doc’s name, hit the enter key, and all documents that contained that pattern would appear.

Hi, Gene,

Very strange... I have Word 97, 2000, XP, and 2003. They all allow you
to enter any part of the filename and hit Enter to list matching files
-- except XP, which insists on having the complete filename up to the
dot.

The only way to work around that is to use the much-reviled Search
function on the Tools menu in the top right corner of the Open dialog.

I believe in Word 2002 you can use wildcards: filen*.

Hi, Suzanne,

You're correct. In fact, it's more than that: you can use multiple
wildcard characters in the same expression. For example, I have two
files in a large folder, "Homonym instructions.doc" and
"Popup_instructions.doc". In Word 2002, I can isolate them in the Open
dialog by entering *instr* and pressing Enter.

But the other three versions -- both before and after Word 2002 -- can
find the same files without the asterisks. <shrug>

Thanks for solution to this problem - this has been driving me mad
since I upgraded to XP
