In versions of Windows PREVIOUS to XP, I could Start > Search > For Files or
Folders, enter my filename or part thereof, and LOOK IN c:; d:; h:;

I could search ONCE across multiple drives. Windows XP doesn't allow me to
do this -- or am I just missing something?

Thanks

After you enter file name etc. click on Advanced options. A new window will
open with the Look in options.

I'm already using Advanced options, as a rule, and ALWAYS use the Look In
drop-down. What I'm saying is that that drop-down used to allow entry of
MULTIPLE DRIVE LETTERS, and no longer seems to accept more than ONE drive
being entered. You used to separate the drive letters with semi-colons --
did MS change the behavior of that field?

But, if I have drives c:, g:, h:, n:, s: and z: under my computer, and only
want to search c:, h: and n: - how do I?

I get you.
No, I have never seen being able to allow entry of selected drives. I can
select one drive or all of them. Nothing in between!

In alternative file manager XYplorer (http://www.xyplorer.com) you can do
it, and more:
c:;d:
c:;d:;g:
c:\windows;d:
c:\windows;d:\blah;f:\blub
etc.
Whatever, no limits.

An alternative is to use the free search utility, Agent Ransack
