How does one find thier IP Address on thier local machine
in Windows XP. Supposedly comcast cable internet service
is supposed to change the number every 10 days to keep
hackers from breaking into machine. What file do you go
to to find your IP Address?
Thanks in advance,
Ed

Changing the IP Address in of and by itself doesn't stop someone from
hacking your system. A properly configured firewall along with all OS and
Application updates and an up-to-date antivirus program are what is needed
to aid in stopping from being hacked. Using a router between your cable
modem and computer(s) adds another level of security as well. And no not
use P2P type programs like kaza, etc.

To ascertain you IP Address you can type IPCONFIG / ALL at a Command Prompt
or Start > Settings > Network Connections > Local Area Connection > Support
tab > Details button.

I haven't found this to be true. I've had the same IP address since the
switchover (several months now).

Start - Run - cmd and in it give the command
ipconfig /all

Having it changed at the interval you mention is not likely to be much
help - and might be inconvenient in other ways. I think it is comcast
trying to put a gloss on something they will do for other reasons, to
save their having to renew the 'lease' on the number. What you need
against the hackers is a firewall - either the one provided in XP or a
third party one like Zone Alarm

I have been on Comcast since the switch over from At Home (now, was
that Jan 02, or Jan 03?) and I don't think my IP has changed once. It
may be true that Comcast renews the lease every 10 days, but they don't
neccesarily change the IP that often.

Aside from which the script kiddies just scan all the Comcast IPs in a
given area, so changing IPs really doesn't do much to protect you. Much
better to be behind a router and a good software firewall.
