Find doesn't find anything

has anyone ever had trouble finding text in a word2003 document using a
custom template? I used Find&Replace on text that I could clearly see on the
page, but the search came up empty. I need to search on words to update a
large document. any suggestions?
 
make sure that formatting is not one of the things you are searching for.
You may also want to hit the MORE button and make sure than none of the
wackier options are chosen
