When I go in to adjust my upper & lower filters in my computer they are
missing. Any ideas?

Why are you trying to adjust them. To WHAT are you trying to adjust
them?

I'm only aware that they are played with when an optical drive doesn't
show... and then the fix is to DELETE them because they've become
corrupted. Once the fix has taken, the filters reappear.

Well it all started out with me not being able to back-up my iTunes. First
when I went under the "device" tab it was blank and I kept getting an error
message that says:
"The registry settings used by the iTunes driver for importing and burning
Cd's & DVDs are missing. This can happen as a result of installing other CD
burning software. Please re-install iTunes"

I have no clue what this means and I've been told my drivers have been
deleted but I can't seem to get them working again and then I've been sent to
device manager and told to adjust my upper and lower filters and it seems it
just gets worse and not better *sigh*

Which I have no idea what this means. I've been told to adjust my upper and
lower filters and I've still not been able to get my drivers installed (which
what I've been told is keeping iTunes from downloading) seems the more I try
the worse it gets.

REINSTALL ITUNES.

Forget about the filters. Reinstall iTunes.

Well now that's a bit harsh. Do you really think I didn't try that already.
No need to be mean and rude

I've tried that too. Completely un-installed every bit of it went into
programs and deleted the files and everything and still no luck. And iTunes
hasn't been much help. They will walk me thru it, they say, for a fee. But I
don't want them screwing up my computer either

Then you must learn to describe your situation in a form that is
readily understandable both to you and to others.

You clearly said:

Well I am sorry but I thought it clear when the warning said re-install that
I would do that. If I wasn'nt clear that is fine, I don't mind someone saying
I didn't explain it right but to respond with

" What part of "Please re-install iTunes" don't you understand?"

Thats just mean and uncalled for. I am lookung for help, not to be treated
like an idiot. I will just go somewhere else if this is how I'm going to be
treated. I thought this was for helping people.

Were we supposed to guess that you'd tried it?

Sorry, but you definitely looked like one so I can't say I really
blame him.

Try posting your question in the iTunes forum here:
http://discussions.apple.com/forum.jspa?forumID=792

Like these Windows newsgroups, the iTunes forums are not staffed by
employees of "the Company" but a place where users help other others --
for free.

As far as your drivers being deleted, can you use your CD drive with
applications *other* than iTunes to either read a CD or write a CD?
That would be very important information to include in your post.

Other useful bits of info would be what version of iTunes you're using
and whether you've ever been able to burn a CD using iTunes (and if so,
what happened between the time you could do so and now).

Also, whoever sent you to Device Manager to deal with upper and lower
filters didn't know what they were talking about. The upperfilters and
lowerfilters entries are in the Windows Registry.

I think the problem is related to the GearSoftware stuff that
Apple uses, to give CD burning capabilities to iTunes. It may be
a matter of finding someone who has a setup that can burn
CDs from iTunes, and comparing their registry entries with the
non-working setup.

As for reinstalling iTunes, I'd probably try removing iTunes,
then cleaning out all the GearSoftware stuff I could find
(both registry and file system), and then try the installation
of iTunes again. I suspect the Apple installer, doesn't
clean out the GearSoftware stuff properly (because, after
all, it came from GearSoftware). This article gives you
an idea how skilled GearSoftware think their customer base is
(rocket scientist required...). Why they just couldn't offer
a "GearBoxCleaner" application, is beyond me.

To call me an idiot is completely uncalled for and so childish it's
ridiculous! People come here for help. Sometimes they may not clearly
identify the problem, that's why you ask for clarification, not resort to
kindergarden name calling. I honestly can't believe this, I guess it's easy
to be mean and rude when you don't have to say it to someone's face. And I
refuse to get sucked into a chidish argument so if you have any other
comments you may keep them to yourself.

If I am not clear in my needs by all means, ask me to clairify. That is why
I've come here in the first place. I know some about computers but I'm no
computer tech and don't always know how to explain the problem. If I would
just be asked nicely what further information is needed I have no problem in
responding. Sometimes I'm just not sure what all information is needed. So
ask for more information, but nicely, there is just no reason to be mean.

Thank you Lem. Thank you for being nice and giving me advice on a better
forum for my problem and for helping me to understand what more information I
need to give to help resolve my problem. I appreciate it immensely and will
post all this on the forum you have directed me to. Again, thank you.

Thanks Paul for the tips. I know I have seem some gear software in folders
but I know I've deleted most I could find but some wouldn't delete. I'll
check out the link you gave me. If off the top of your head you happen to
know why the rest of the programs won't delete that'd be great too but I'll
definitely check out the link. Thanks alot for your help

You're welcome. For best results, remember that people who read your
posts cannot either see your computer or read your mind. Thus:

(a) explain exactly what you've done and what happened as a result, in
as much detail as possible

(b) quote error messages as exactly as you can

(c) when you uninstall something, do not "go into Program [Files] and
delete" things. Use Control Panel > Add or Remove Programs (or click on
a link to the application's Uninstall routine, which is all that Add or
Remove does anyway).
