filmy or shadowy look to folders and thumbnails

In my documents a bunch of folders look greyed out or filmy, but when I click
on them, they seem fine. The new folders I have created are normal looking.
This happened about a month ago. If I copy a folder it looks to the same on
another PC. The bigges hassle is with my photos. All the thumbnails are
hard to see till I click on an individual one and it looks fine, but it is
frustrating in looking through ones pictures. Can anyone tell me how to get
this back to normal?

I have run all sorts of virus scans, etc. I even did a clean install of
windows, but the files don't look any better when I copy them back to this
pc.

Certain files and folders in XP are called 'hidden', meaning they are
ordinarily invisible. Hidden files and folders are typically important
system files/folders and other so-called 'read only' files/folders. They are
normally hidden from view so inexperienced users won't play with them or
delete them.

Users can choose to see these hidden files and folders by opening any
Windows Explorer window and going to Tools > Folder Options > View tab and
clicking on 'Show hidden files and folders'. When you do this, you can see
the hidden files and folders, and they work just fine, but their icons look
washed out to reminder you that these files and folders should not be messed
with.

Ted,
Thanks for your response. It does make sense. I did change the properties
of the hidden folders to see them, but the ones that I am frustrated with
particularly are MY Pictures in that folder. How can I get rid of that look
from folders that are not meant to be hidden?

Right Click on the My Documents folder, select properties
and de-select the hidden attribute on the page. Click on
apply and confirm this for all 'sub-folders'. The ones that
must remain the hidden folders will revert to their hidden
state after the change, but the folders that are not
protected will stay in the normal mode.
