could anyone please tell me what a "idx" file is and how
do i open them..i must have a million of them on my hard
drive...thank you very much

idx was the extension used by OE4 AFAIR....you will have to either
import into OE5 or 6 or use OE4 to read it AFAIK....

That's another of those extensions, like *.dat, that's used by many
programs for many different things. I know that both Agent (news
reader) and Pegasus mail use the *.idx extension for files that are
indexes to message files. The format and content of the two is
completely different. In each case, the user *never* uses them
directly, the program creates, uses, and deletes them as its needs
direct.
