have just changed from windows 98 to XP. all the files I saved are in some format that will not allow me to see them. Most appeared to be in a windows media file, I changed them to notepad, wordpad & even tried adobe to read them. Is there a particular format that i can select to see/read the original file please?

What format were they originally? Surely you can tell from some of the
familiar file names.

sorry fellas to be so thick but what sort of files can there be apart from dll, wps, notepad, wordpad etc. i get a message that the file cannot be opened unless it is supported by a program. previously i could just open the folder & the info that i had written & saved in my docs would open & there was my text. all the files in both drives sem to be the same now so i cannot get info from any of them . baffled!!!

Did you do an in-place Upgrade or a Clean Install? If the latter then you
need to re-install all your applications!

Hi Mike,

Have you installed the program that you used to originally make the file? it would help if you could tell us the extensions of
the files (this will help us to determine what application created it).
